You know what you want to change. So why do you keep getting pulled back into the same pattern?
Inner Story Works provides hypnotherapy, coaching, and pattern-change work for motivated adults who want to explore what may be getting in the way — and practice a different way forward.
Become the Narrator of your story and the Navigator of what comes next.
You're the Narrator & Navigator. Cressler is your Host & Guide — you choose the destination, together you investigate the route.

You already know what you want. Knowing isn't always the part that's stuck.
Most people who come to this work can state their intention clearly. The difficulty isn't usually a lack of information. It's that conscious intention and automatic behavior don't always align — and that gap is frustrating, not a personal failing.
You're not broken, lazy, or lacking willpower. The fact that you can name what you want to change — and that you keep finding yourself back in the same pattern — is exactly the kind of situation this work is built for.
Your pattern may have a story.
Unwanted patterns sometimes developed for understandable reasons. A response may have become associated with something a person needed at the time — and the circumstances can change while the learned pattern remains. That doesn't make it permanent; it makes it something you can work with.
Instead of only asking
“How do I stop this?”
It can be useful to ask
“What is happening here, and what could I do differently?”
You don't have to fight the pattern to become curious about it.
Your Story. Your Direction.
You are the Narrator and the Navigator — the author of your story and the one who chooses where it goes. Cressler's role is different: an Editor for the story, a Scout for the terrain ahead.
The Narrator
It's your story. Notice the interpretations, assumptions, beliefs, and meanings you've developed through experience. Being the Narrator isn't inventing a false positive story or pretending difficult things didn't happen — it's becoming more conscious of how experiences are interpreted and how the story you carry may influence what happens next.
The Navigator
It's your destination. Consider where you are now, where you want to go, what matters to you, what resources are available, and what route you could try. The Navigator chooses the direction — and what to do when an obstacle appears.
The Editor
An Editor doesn't take over authorship. Cressler helps you look more closely at what's already on the page — assumptions, recurring themes, perspectives, beliefs, interpretations, and possibilities for reframing. The Editor doesn't write your story for you. He helps you notice what may be hiding between the lines.
The Scout
A Scout explores the terrain ahead. Cressler can help notice patterns, obstacles, resources, options, and possible routes that may be difficult to see while you're in the middle of the situation. The Scout doesn't decide where you should go — you choose the destination, and together we investigate the route.
You choose the destination. We investigate the route.
A flexible way to move between story and direction.
Not a guaranteed clinical protocol — a shared structure for working with a pattern deliberately rather than fighting it. The work moves between understanding where a pattern came from and choosing what to practice next.
Identify
What specifically do you want to be different? Clarify the behavior, response, or outcome you want to change.
Explore
Get curious about when the pattern occurs, what surrounds it, what beliefs or associations accompany it, and what may be maintaining it.
Edit
Examine perspectives, interpretations, assumptions, and learned associations. Explore whether another framing or response could be more useful. Editing doesn't mean denying or rewriting historical facts.
Scout
Explore possible alternatives, resources, behaviors, practices, and routes toward your desired outcome.
Navigate
You practice, observe what happens, learn from feedback, and make adjustments. A path rarely goes in a straight line — and that's expected.
Insight without action can leave someone stuck. Action without understanding can turn into another battle against themselves. Inner Story Works explores both.

“You're the Narrator and Navigator. I'm your Editor and Scout.”
Cressler Jamison McArthur doesn't see his role as writing someone's story for them or choosing their destination. His role is collaborative — helping people investigate patterns, explore perspectives, identify possibilities, and practice approaches that may help them move toward their chosen goals.
Cressler grew up in Otto, North Carolina, in the Nantahala National Forest — the adopted oldest sibling on an alpaca farm, where caring for younger siblings and much of the manual labor taught him self-reliance, discipline, and leadership early on. The forest shaped something lasting in him: a sense that nature is where he feels most grounded and clear, and a habit of looking for the patterns and flow beneath the surface of things.
That pull toward systems and flow carried him into the military as a Liquid Fuels and Water Systems technician, and later onto the road — traveling the country in an RV, performing music, leading meditation drum circles, and playing for children in Boulder. Years of caregiving in memory care, hospice, and home health, alongside study across Christian, Wiccan and Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist, Zen, Daoist, and Rosicrucian traditions, deepened a single conviction: that healing is an integration of body, mind, spirit, and story — a flow to be understood, not forced.
The work itself is recognizable, professional change support — hypnotherapy, coaching, and pattern-change work. “Editor and Scout” describes the working relationship, not a regulated professional credential. Cressler is a Registered Member of the International Board of Coaches and Practitioners (IBCP), Member #12951 (membership documentation expires March 13, 2027; not a state license), holds Certifications of Training through Transform Destiny, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.

The pattern may be part of your story. It doesn't have to decide every chapter that comes next.
