How It Works

A shared structure for working with a pattern — not fighting it.

This isn't a guaranteed clinical protocol. It's a flexible way to approach change deliberately, moving between understanding the story and choosing a direction.

You're the Narrator & Navigator. Cressler is your Host & Guide — you choose the destination, together you investigate the route.

Step 01

Identify

What specifically do you want to be different? Clarify the behavior, response, or outcome you want to change. The more concrete, the more workable.

Step 02

Explore

Get curious about when the pattern occurs, what surrounds it, what beliefs or associations accompany it, and what may be maintaining it — with curiosity, not shame.

Step 03

Edit

Examine perspectives, interpretations, assumptions, and learned associations. Explore whether another framing or response could be more useful. Editing doesn't mean denying or rewriting historical facts.

Step 04

Scout

Explore possible alternatives, resources, behaviors, practices, and routes toward your desired outcome. You choose the destination; together we investigate the route.

Step 05

Navigate

You practice, observe what happens, learn from feedback, and make adjustments. A path rarely goes in a straight line — and that's expected.

Story and Direction

Understanding and action, brought together.

Understanding where a pattern came from can be valuable, but insight alone doesn't always create behavioral change. Forcing action without understanding what maintains a recurring pattern can sometimes leave a person repeatedly fighting themselves. Inner Story Works explores both.

Story — Narrator & Editor

What happened? What meaning did you make of it? What did you learn or come to believe? What pattern may have developed — and is that interpretation still helping you? You're the Narrator; Cressler helps you examine what may be hiding between the lines.

Direction — Navigator & Scout

Where are you now? Where do you want to go? What's getting in the way? What other routes or responses are available, and what can you practice next? You're the Navigator; Cressler is your Scout, investigating the route.
